Kurds in the Diaspora Need a TV Station

Aram Duhoki/Canada

The Kurdish Diaspora, a non-profit organization, has witnessed a significant increase in the number of Kurds living outside their homeland over the past two decades. Today, the new generation is in a strong position to advocate for the Kurdish cause more effectively within the government sectors of the countries where they have settled. However, a key challenge remains: the absence of a dedicated broadcast platform through which they can express their perspectives. Instead of focusing solely on a website or magazine, it would be more strategic for the new generation to establish an English-language TV channel for the Diaspora, serving as their collective voice.

Currently, while there are many Kurdish TV broadcasts in Kurdistan, most offer similar programming. Yet, there is no English-language channel specifically tailored for Kurds in the diaspora, even though such a platform has become increasingly necessary for the following reasons:

  • It is crucial for Kurds to communicate their political situation to the international community, as the issue is largely a matter of global concern. External support is essential for finding a resolution, making outreach beyond the region more important than internal communication.
  • A large number of Kurds have settled in English-speaking countries, and after decades, more than two generations have grown up without fluency in Kurdish. An English-language channel would empower these individuals to engage more actively in shaping the future of the Kurdish cause.
  • The Kurdish business community abroad has developed to a point where a direct broadcast platform is needed for advertising. An English-language TV channel could serve as a powerful resource for building a stronger economic foundation for Kurdish communities worldwide.

Moreover, this TV channel would strengthen communication among Kurds, as differences in dialects have become a significant challenge, especially for the younger generation.

In conclusion, establishing an English-language channel for Kurds in the diaspora would be a crucial step in unifying their efforts, promoting a more organized approach to addressing shared concerns, and advancing the Kurdish cause on a global scale.
