Bavê Teyar, born as Cuma Xelo in 1961 in Qamishlo, Rojava (northern Syria), was a celebrated Kurdish artist whose contributions to music, theater, and comedy left an indelible mark on Kurdish cultural heritage. Known for his charisma and ability to connect with audiences, he became a symbol of Kurdish pride and resilience. As a father of eight, Bavê Teyar’s devotion to his family and his community shaped his work and his legacy. On January 18, 2025, Bavê Teyar tragically lost his life following a Turkish airstrike on a peaceful protest at the Tishrin Dam. The protest had been organized to oppose ongoing attacks by Turkey and Turkish-backed militias on Kurdish territories. Bavê Teyar, who was present to support the cause, was critically injured in the strike and succumbed to his wounds the following day. Before the attack, he passionately proclaimed, “We are not afraid of death; we will protect our lands until the end,” words that now echo as a testament to his unwavering commitment to his people. Bavê Teyar’s death is a devastating loss to the Kurdish community. His work, which celebrated Kurdish culture and amplified the voices of the oppressed, lives on as a reminder of the strength and unity of the Kurdish people. His legacy inspires future generations to cherish and protect their heritage, even in the face of adversity.
