As the conflict in Syria continues to evolve, the Kurdish regions of North Syria, particularly the city of Kobani, remain at the heart of a global conversation. Kobani, a symbol of Kurdish resilience and unity, stands at a critical juncture as Turkey accelerates its push to dismantle Kurdish self-governance in the region.
Turkey’s recent actions are strategically timed, taking advantage of the political transition in the United States. With the current U.S. administration preparing to leave office and the new administration not yet in power, Turkey is exploiting this temporary gap, moving rapidly to crush any semblance of Kurdish autonomy in Syria. Turkish forces aim to eliminate the self-determined Kurdish system in North Syria, as President Erdoğan has long opposed the idea of Kurdish self-governance.
However, Turkey’s assumptions about the Kurdish people could not be further from reality. The Kurds of today are not the same as they were a century ago. They have grown stronger, smarter, and more unified, with millions of Kurds now living across the globe. Their voice echoes in international forums, their plight recognized by allies and supporters in governments worldwide, including the United States and Europe.
The Kurdish people of North Syria, particularly the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have demonstrated unparalleled courage and resilience. They were instrumental in defeating ISIS, the most dangerous terrorist organization the modern world has known. Fighting on behalf of not only themselves but the entire global community, the Kurdish forces suffered significant losses while ensuring the safety of millions. Their bravery earned them the respect and recognition of the international community, solidifying their position as reliable allies of the United States and defenders of democracy.
The region of Tamargo in South Kurdistan also serves as a reminder of the Kurdish people’s sacrifices and strategic importance in the fight against ISIS. It was here, and in cities like Kobani, that the Kurds proved to the world that they were not only capable fighters but also loyal allies. Today, even the United States has shifted its tone regarding the SDF, openly acknowledging that the Syrian Kurds are allies and friends. This change in language signals a growing recognition of the Kurdish people’s role as true partners in the region, a development that holds immense significance for the future.
The Kurdish system in North Syria represents a rare beacon of hope in a region plagued by conflict. Their governance model is inclusive and democratic, bringing together people of different ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds. Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, Yazidis, and other minorities coexist as brothers and sisters, united in their commitment to peace and equality. This harmonious system stands in stark contrast to the chaos surrounding it and offers a vision for what a peaceful, inclusive Syria could look like.
Syria’s future cannot be rebuilt without the Kurds. They are the light in the darkness, guiding the path to stability and coexistence. Without their leadership, Syria risks falling deeper into turmoil. The Kurdish people have proven time and again that they are not only capable but indispensable partners in any efforts to restore peace in the region.
As Turkey continues its aggressive campaign, the international community must not turn a blind eye. The Kurds have earned their place at the table through blood, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to freedom and justice. They deserve the support of their allies and the recognition of their contributions to global security.
Kobani, Tamargo, and all the Kurdish regions of Syria are more than battlegrounds—they are symbols of hope, resilience, and the potential for a better future. The world owes it to the Kurds to stand with them now, as they have stood for the world in the fight against terror.
If the international community fails to act, the consequences will be felt far beyond the borders of Syria. It is time to ensure that the sacrifices of the Kurdish people are honored and that their role in shaping a peaceful, democratic Middle East is safeguarded.
Kobani is not just a city—it is a testament to the Kurdish spirit and the unyielding hope for a brighter tomorrow. And it is this hope that we must all fight to protect.
