On the eve of November 7, Canterbury High School opened its doors with warmth and inspiration, welcoming prospective students and their families for its annual Arts Open House. This event, a cherished tradition, offers an unforgettable introduction to the Visual and Literary Arts programs that have shaped Ottawa’s arts community. Canterbury is more than a school—it’s a vibrant cultural space where young artists can hone their skills, explore their creative voices, and join a supportive community passionate about the arts.
Founded in 1969, Canterbury High School has long been an educational pioneer. With features like adaptable, movable walls and one of Ottawa’s largest high school libraries, Canterbury was designed for collaborative and innovative learning. In 1983, it launched its renowned specialized arts program, establishing itself as Ottawa’s arts magnet school and drawing aspiring young creatives from across the region. This open house celebrated Canterbury’s legacy, while also sharing its vision of nurturing future artists through immersive education.
The Visual Arts program at Canterbury introduces students to a wide range of media, spanning classical methods in painting, drawing, and sculpture to modern approaches in digital arts. Similarly, the Literary Arts program provides young writers with a foundation to develop their unique voices, experimenting across genres like poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and playwriting. Together, these programs have produced graduates who excel in creative fields worldwide, reflecting Canterbury’s steadfast dedication to artistic excellence.
One of the highlights of the evening was a captivating slideshow presentation led by Canterbury’s art teachers. This showcase of student artwork drew families into the visual storytelling that defines the Canterbury experience. The display featured an impressive range of artistic styles, each piece reflecting the hard work, creativity, and individuality that Canterbury’s programs inspire. Prospective students and their families, including my daughter, were enthralled by the beauty and skill on display, gaining a firsthand glimpse of the high level of artistry the school encourages. For my daughter, this presentation brought Canterbury’s vision to life, fueling her excitement and solidifying her dream of being part of this extraordinary creative community.
In addition to celebrating student talent, faculty members took the time to explain the application process in detail. They broke down portfolio requirements, deadlines, and submission guidelines, providing prospective students with clear, practical advice. Teachers emphasized that a strong portfolio combines technical skills with personal expression, encouraging each student to present work that genuinely reflects who they are. This guidance made the application process feel accessible and achievable, showing that Canterbury’s staff are not just educators but mentors dedicated to supporting each applicant.
Throughout the evening, Principal John Unsworth and faculty members warmly engaged with families in one-on-one conversations, answering questions and sharing their passion for the arts programs. Their friendliness and approachability added to the sense of community and support Canterbury is known for, reinforcing its reputation as a school that values both artistic achievement and personal well-being. Families left the event feeling welcomed and reassured, knowing Canterbury is a place where students are nurtured in every aspect of their journey.
As the event concluded, it was clear that this open house had accomplished much more than simply introducing Canterbury’s programs. It was an invitation to join a thriving, inclusive community that embraces creativity, discipline, and exploration. For my daughter, who left the event deeply inspired, Canterbury represents an ideal place to grow, learn, and achieve her artistic dreams. Canterbury High School is more than a school; it’s a launchpad for young artists eager to make their mark.
